Review
Composer and "one-man band", James Hollihan, has the funky side and the pretty side in this "The Funky Misfit" recording. As a guitarist, Hollihan takes the smooth jazz to a higher level by introducing lite-funky tunes with some playful instrumentation. On some tracks, Hollihan adds a little traditional flavor but is careful not to make that styling the main focus. Influences from Ronny Jordan and Acoustic Alchemy are all evident. The album occasionally spots some Latin and swing grooves which are all part of the traditional flavor. One of the most impressive part, but a rather short piece is the orchestration on the track "Solitude". "Cafe Blue" is an intelligently written soul track that starts with cool electric piano intro mesmerizing the listener. This album is worth a try.
