Launched October 2, 2001 in New York City, USA, CIM Radio began as a 24 hour smooth jazz radio channel broadcasting to a worldwide audience. After 5 months, CIM Radio was listed at windowsmedia.com and the radio service began to take off of what will later become one of the leading channels specializing in this format eventually growing up to 3.5 million global listeners. From one 56k stream all the way to three streams supporting two different audio formats, CIM Radio has certainly come a long ways in offering the smoothest and coolest tunes on the Internet.

The philosophy behind the music is the coolness factor plus the unique element that makes a particular piece special and worth playing. The channel emphasizes on cool instrumental music with a beat and occasional vocals. "What my personal musical taste is and what I will play on the radio are two very different things," claims Peter Su, program director of CIM Radio, "I am fairly open to different styles of music, but I only pick the best out of each style."

Digging deep into the new format and searching for independent artists with a groove, CIM Radio has allowed new styles to express themselves without being tied to the commercial reality of the music industry. "We are reaching deep, very very deep into the format to showcase new talents. It's part of the reason why we're successful."

Early 2004, CIM Radio switched its format to smooth fusion, a spin-off from smooth jazz, to include a wider variety of music. "We're not trying to be another top 40 station by playing everything that the music world has to offer, but instead we play music that has significant variations from the original root often compared to Chill music."

CIM Radio recently celebrated 3 years of broadcasting on the Internet and marks the inclusion of the radio into MSN Radio network in conjunction with the launch of Windows Media Player 10.
